Leonetto Cappiello Absinthe Gempp Pernod Poster
(0000-2034)
by Leonetto Cappiello
A beauty in a blue dress prances with her precious bottle of Gempp Pernod.
The Absinthe Gempp Pernod poster, featuring one of Cappiello's happy beauties, refers to a branch operation set up in Lunel in 1850 for Edouard Pernod, Henri-Louis (Pernod)'s son by his first wife; he, in turn, passed it to his son-in-law Charles Gempp in 1880. (Wine Spectator, 173) This colorful poster is filled with such a sense of giddy pleasure that one can't help but wish for a glass of the potentially toxic liqueur in the company of Cappiello's bubbly charmer.
