1936 Sweden's capitol and largest city, Stockholm, built on several peninsulas and islands and often called the Venice of the North.
Architecturally speaking, Stockholm - built on several peninsulas and islands and often called the Venice of the North - is one of the finest cities in the world. Swedens capitol and largest city is situated where Lake Malaren flows into the Baltic Sea. From the grand tower of the Stadshuset, the new city hall built in 1923, the ""old town"" island of Gamla Stan reaches back towards the horizon. The Church of St. Nicholas or Storkyrka (great church) dating from the 13th century, the Church of St. Gertrude and the Great Square are among the other famous landmarks laid out by Donner with silhouetted colorform tenacity for Stockholms Swedish Traffic Association.
