1933 Monaco F1 Grand Prix
(0000-0278)
by Geo Ham
Vintage Gran Prix Bugatti race car speeding through Monaco.
Hamel, who signed his works Geo Ham, devoted much of his career to painting and illustrating automobiles and airplanes. For the 5th Grand Prix, he puts the viewer right in the drivers seat, closing in on a Bugatti as we race to the finish line in Monte-Carlo, visible ahead. It was a desperate duel between two Italians: 1932 winner Tazio Nuvolari and Achille Varzi in a Bugatti T51. The finish was a cliff-hanger as Nuvolari, leading in the very last lap, was forced to stop, giving Varzi the crown.
